Blinds for Rentals

Landlords have a duty of care to tenants!

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents since 1999 there have been at least 35 fatalities where
babies and young children have become accidentally entangled in internal window blind cords and chains.

Some of these accidents have occurred in rented homes.

Are the blinds in your property childsafe? Cords must be 1.5M off the ground!

Blinds installed before 2014 should be made childsafe by using a cleat or chain tensioner.  If the blinds cannot be made safe by the addition of a compliant safety device(s) they should be replaced.

Blinds installed by the Landlord or Agent after Feburary 2014 must be compliant with the child safety requirements of BS EN 13120:2009+A1:2014

Blinds installed by the tenant should be checked by the Landlord or Agent and all tenants should be advised of child safety aspects.

The BBSA strongly recommends that blinds which are inherently safe, sometimes called ‘safe by design’, are used in rented properties as thesedo not require any supplementary safety devices.
